Overview of all Porsche models

what is porsche

At first, it used a refined version of the 3.3 L engine of the previous Turbo, but two years later a turbocharged engine based on the 3.6 L engine of the other 964 models was introduced. Both versions boasted a top speed of approximately 236 km/h (147 mph). The first car to bear the Porsche name, and the pre-cursor to the 911, was the Porsche 356. The Porsche family were designing cars long before the 356 hit the road — but those vehicles either tended to be racing models or were to be built by other companies. Porsche added a GT3 RS model that pairs the naturally aspirated motor with “motorsport-derived aerodynamics.” The most expensive model is the new 911 Sport Classic, which is basically a 911 Turbo with a manual transmission. The German luxury and sports brand is known for the iconic 911 sports car, but of course in recent years sales successes like the Macan and Cayenne SUVs and the fully electric Taycan showed a different path was possible.

More Cars

Manthey began releasing its own modified version of the car last decade, which features even more aggressive body kits and upgraded suspensions. The modifications don’t just result in marginal gains, either, as these cars have set production vehicle lap records at race tracks like the Nürburgring and Silverstone. This 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Targa was purchased by the current owner in 2022 following registration history in Florida, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. It is powered by a 3.6-liter flat-six paired with a four-speed Tiptronic automatic transaxle and is finished in Grand Prix White over Cashmere Beige leather upholstery. Equipment includes 17″ RUF Speedline wheels, Bilstein B6 shocks, Euro-specification springs, a removable Targa roof panel, cruise control, power-adjustable front seats, and an Alpine CD stereo.

Depending on the model of Porsche you might be interested in or capable of purchasing, its engine may be able to produce more than 500 horsepower. Porsches are lightweight vehicles engineered for fast driving, which means the power available goes further toward its acceleration than in heavier cars. However, Aurora canabiss stock unique to Porsche is the amount of power created by an engine placed behind the rear wheels, which makes these cars handle differently from any front-engine or mid-engine vehicle around. This means you should know how to control it before taking off down the strip at full speed. News stories and videos abound with people crashing brand-new supercars because owners did not respect the amount of power they had control over.

Some 911s, like the 911 GT1 Strassenversion (basically a street-legal version of one of Porsche race cars) is amongst the most expensive vehicles ever sold. At the other end of the spectrum, the still controversial 996 is one of the more affordable Porsches, and a way to get the German manufacturer’s most famous vehicle for as little as $20,000. It’s not a truly comprehensive guide, there are entire books devoted to just one of Porsche’s vehicle types, but it is a starting point.

For the 1976 model year, the 912E best online stock trading courses for 2021 was produced for the U.S. market. This was a 4-cylinder version of the 911 in the same manner as the 912 that had last been produced in 1969. It used the I-series chassis powered by the Volkswagen 2.0 engine also used in the Porsche 914 for 1973 through 1975 model years.

Here we focus on insuring a 911, for which there is the most information available, but the information will crossover to other models. Of course, insurance rates vary wildly depending on a few factors, and 911s are much more expensive cars, to begin with. Despite this, the annual cost of insuring new Porsche models is not much more than other high-performance cars that cost less. While the 968 represented good value at the 15 best tech stocks to buy for 2021 the time — it was the cheapest way to get something “new” with a Porsche badge on the front, it’s a pretty questionable buy these days.

Put another way, you're on the Jedi Council, but you're not being granted the rank of Master. You'll both love the fact you can tell people about the Porsche in your garage, and hate the fact you didn't bankrupt yourself buying the rusted-out husk of a 930 instead. The European version of the RS is fitted with lightweight plexiglass rear windows and a factory-installed roll cage. The 996 was replaced with the 997 in 2004, for the 2005 model year. It retains the 996's basic profile, with an even lower 0.28 drag coefficient, but draws on the 993 for detailing. In addition, the new headlights revert to the original bug-eye design from the teardrop scheme of the 996.

Once the warranty period is over, the dealer is not necessary, although many will continue to use its services as they have certified technicians trained by Porsche. Furthermore, used car and classic car buyers also need a qualified shop -– taking your 911 Turbo to Pep Boys would not be advisable. For classic Porsches, independent shop labor rates may be slightly less than a dealer, but not by much. They will also require the same oil changes and tire replacements but also need a biannual tune-up to the tune of $1,500.

  1. In researching the brand, some doubt can be cast upon this notion.
  2. A touring version was also introduced which comes standard with the comfort package and the manual transmission along with the deletion of the fixed rear wing and employing an electronically operated rear wing instead.
  3. It made its debut back in 2009 and is another example of Porsche basically doing everything now instead of limiting itself to sports coupes.
  4. In the mid-1970s, the naturally aspirated 911 Carrera RSR won world championship races including Targa Florio and the 24 Hours of Daytona.

So it has four doors, comfortably seats five, and features a highly luxurious interior. It also comes with the kind of performance you would expect from a Porsche, even if it’s a bit bigger than usual and the engine is in the front. But the idea really took off with the Porsche 924, a stripped-down sports coupe that the company produced between 1976 and 1988. The original Porsche 718 is a racing model and is something you’re unlikely to add to your collection, even if you have plenty of spare cash. The roadgoing 718 is actually the Porsche 982, and includes the fourth-generation Boxster and third-generation Cayman. Porsche SE was created in June 2007 by renaming the old Dr. Ing. h.c.

Early Boxsters had their problems and were subject to some obvious corner-cutting in an effort to keep prices down, but things have improved drastically over the years. Its mid-engine configuration is arguably better than the flagship 911's classic rear-engine setup, too. If you can get over the stigma, you can nab a Boxster for around $25,000 on average, with some super cheap examples dipping into four figures. Just remember though, even though it's entry-level, it's still built from Porsche parts. So there's likely to be some serious expenses down the line, especially if you opt for one of the issue-packed late '90s models. Any of the three will stand to you as a driver, as all options are powered by a 4.8L V8 engine that produces 400 horsepower (500 horsepower for the turbo trim).

Rust is a problem for older Porsches and a serious concern for all cars up to 1989, despite galvanizing. Among the spots that need to be checked are sunroof drains and windshield pillars, the trunk floor up front, floorpans in the rear, the battery tray, and just below the windows. Other trouble spots exist, so it is important to be thorough, especially on more dilapidated project cars. If you are buying a brand-new or late-model Porsche, this does not apply.
